The Adelaide Street Circuit holds a special place in Australian motorsport history, particularly for its role in hosting Formula 1 and major touring car events. The temporary street circuit was first introduced in 1985, transforming the roads of central Adelaide into one of the most celebrated venues on the Formula 1 calendar.
From 1985 to 1995, Adelaide hosted the Australian Grand Prix as the season finale of the Formula 1 World Championship. The circuit quickly earned a reputation for dramatic title deciders and high-stakes moments. Memorable races included the rain-soaked 1989 Grand Prix, famously won by Thierry Boutsen, and the controversial 1994 title showdown between Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill. Adelaide’s combination of fast straights, heavy braking zones, and tight street sections made it both challenging and unforgiving, contributing to its iconic status among drivers and fans alike.
When the Australian Grand Prix moved to Melbourne in 1996, Adelaide did not disappear from top-level motorsport. The city successfully reinvented the event as the Adelaide 500, which became one of the headline rounds of the Australian Supercars Championship. First held in 1999, the event grew into one of the most popular races on the Supercars calendar, blending high-intensity street racing with a festival atmosphere in the heart of the city.
Over the years, the circuit layout has evolved, but its character as a fast and technical street track has remained intact. The Adelaide Street Circuit continues to be associated with major championship moments, passionate crowds, and a unique city-centre setting that distinguishes it from permanent racing facilities.
Today, Adelaide remains one of Australia’s most historic street racing venues, recognised worldwide for its Formula 1 legacy and nationally for its enduring Supercars tradition. From 2027, the circuit enters a new chapter as it is set to host the Australian round of the MotoGP World Championship, bringing premier motorcycle racing to the city centre for the first time.
